Paul Dobson
Torbay Artsbase Award Winner 2008 for Creative Contribution to the Community.
The Award was won as a result of a very successful working partnership with Sarah Welsh from Mewstones Ltd. for coordinating "Space Invaders" - a Creative Torbay Initiative to set up and run two temporary galleries in Torquay and Brixham, and also occupy as many empty shop spaces in the towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham to brighten up Torbay streets and showcase the variety of talent of Artists in the South of Devon.
My painting style is derived from the Pop Art genre made famous by contemporary masters such as Andy Warhole and Roy Liechtenstein from the 1960s up to the present day.
I trade under the name Popart and Retro Design and produce paintings using a mix of bold colour, high contrast monochrome and black and white.
When showcasing my work, I paint Popart tributes of stars from the rock, pop and show business world to demonstrate my talent.
However, as I can often be seen painting live at exhibitions, I find that the bulk of my work is from original portrait commissions, working direct with the customer as a result of the style of celebrity work they have seen.
I am also one of the tutors at Sustainable Arts - ARTIS, a group of artisans teaching sustainable skills such as Cob bread oven building, Lime & Earth plastering techniques, How to make natural paints, Bushcraft, Coracle building, How to build your own Wind turbine, and many more.
